Colin Maitland, 26 February 2013

In my first blog in in this series I described how you can setup a free 30-day trial of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Online.

I described how to configure some Personal Options and System Settings in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 so that you get the best experience from your trial.

In this blog I will provide instructions on how to configure Microsoft Internet Explorer settings so that you get the best experience from your trial within Microsoft Internet Explorer. Microsoft Dynamics CRM may also be used with other Web Browsers. This Microsoft Knowledge Base Article provides additional information on supported platforms and web browsers as at 1st February 2013. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2784954.

In a subsequent blog I will provide instructions for configuring Microsoft Dynamics CRM for Outlook

To start, the supported versions of Internet Explorer are versions 8, 9 and 10 depending on which version of Microsoft Windows you are using. Internet Explorer versions 8 and 9 may be used with Windows Vista and Internet Explorer version 10 may be used with Windows 8.

There are three important Internet Explorer settings to configure. These are Browsing History, Temporary Internet Files and Popup-Blocker settings. The following Microsoft provided information/instructions, slightly edited and updated with screenshots for this blog, describe how to configure each of these.

Temporary Internet Files

To make sure that Internet files for Microsoft Dynamics CRM are not being deleted, increase the disk space for temporary Internet files.

1. Open Internet Explorer, and on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

2. On the General tab, in the Browsing history section, click Settings.

3. Set the Disk space to use field to 350. The default value is 50.

4. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Browsing History

It is recommended that you do not select the option to delete the browsing history when you exit from your browser. If you select this option, it deletes everything marked in your Browsing history settings, such as temporary Internet files, cookies, and history (by default, the check boxes for these options are selected). Deleting your temporary Internet files causes Internet Explorer to cache the files again, and deleting cookies signs you out of Microsoft Dynamics CRM.

Allow pop-up windows for Microsoft Dynamics CRM URLs

Microsoft Dynamics CRM uses pop-up windows when a new record is opened or created. Your browser may be blocking these windows because of the pop-up blocker settings. You must configure the pop-up blocker settings to allow pop-up windows for the Microsoft Dynamics CRM websites.

1. Open Internet Explorer, and on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

2. Click the Privacy tab, and in the Pop-Up Blocker area, click Settings.

3. In the Address of website to allow box, type the URL that you use to access Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Your Microsoft Dynamics CRM URL will end in "dynamics.com". E.g. https://jscrm.crm5.dynamics.com. In my first blog in this series of used an example of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Organisation called jscrm. At this step you will need to use the name of your Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Online Organisation. Alternately, you could add the following address *.dynamics.com instead.

4. Click Add, and then confirm that the URL has been added to the Allowed sites box.

5. Click Close, and then click OK. For the changes to take effect, restart your browser.
